{"id":15271,"date":"2022-07-27T18:10:22","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T12:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fintoo.in\/blog\/?p=15271"},"modified":"2023-12-04T13:28:40","modified_gmt":"2023-12-04T07:58:40","slug":"rising-inflation-and-its-impact-on-stock-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/rising-inflation-and-its-impact-on-stock-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising Inflation And Its Impact On Stock Markets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a recent survey done by market research agency, Ipsos, across 27 countries, named \u2013 \u201cWhat Worries the World\u201d \u2013 Inflation, has topped the list beating poverty, unemployment, crime, and covid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With most commodity prices seeing anywhere between 50% to 100% increase in their prices over a period of 2 years i.e 2020 to 2022, inflation has troubled everybody &#8211; from governments to common households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crude for example, which hit an all-time closing low of USD 19 a barrel on 01\/04\/2020 in the pandemic period, made a life new lifetime high of 121 $\/ barrel on 01\/06\/2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This effect has been common in all major commodities all across the spectrum \u2013 from steel to gold to silver to wheat. This has hampered the economic recovery that the world was so desperately trying to achieve post-Covid pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is very evident in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) &amp; Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation numbers that the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (or MoSPI) of India has been releasing since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wholesale Price Index (WPI) Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/wpi.png\" alt=\"\"  style=\"width:577px;height:323px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/wpi.png 850w, https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/wpi-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/wpi-480x269.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" class=\"wp-image-15272 no-lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consumer Price Index (CPI)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1332\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/CPI.png\" alt=\"\"  style=\"width:668px;height:375px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/CPI.png 1332w, https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/CPI-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.fintoo.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/CPI-480x270.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1332px) 100vw, 1332px\" class=\"wp-image-15273 no-lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This rise in inflation has seriously damaged the Indian story and dampened the demand. The effect has also been visible in the stock markets. In fact, all signs are pointing to the same point \u2013 <strong>Inflation will be the next big test for the Stock Markets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising inflation has caused investors to have two major worries \u2013 reduction in demand and pressure on profit margins of companies. This will as a double whammy for Indian companies causing investors to re-assess their long-term and short-term portfolios. Also, given the global nature of inflation rise and recession fears rising due to that same, no company whether domestic focus or companies with large global exposure will remain unharmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it does not seem like everything is bad. The nature of this inflation is expected to be transitionary. Also, commodity-focused companies, like mining, oil extraction companies, and specialty commodity manufacturers are expected to do well. This is the only segment of companies where margins are expected to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as mentioned earlier, this inflation is expected to peak by end of 2022 to early 2023, improving business conditions and boosting organic demand, growth, and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides demand-supply dynamics, governments all over the world and respective central banks are taking steps to address this issue. For now, raising interest rates seems to be the only weapon that is being considered.
